What If Everything You Believed About Yourself Was a Lie?

balance thoughts boundaries connection emotional freedom emotional healing limiting beliefs May 04, 2025

What if the very beliefs that shaped your identity—the ones passed down through culture, religion, or survival—weren’t actually rooted in truth, but in fear?

What if the “rules” that taught you how to stay safe were the same ones silently keeping you stuck?

At first, it might be hard to see. These beliefs don’t always scream out in dramatic ways. They whisper quietly in your thoughts, your relationships, your career decisions, and how you show up—or don’t—in the world.

  • You might feel it when you constantly second-guess yourself, even after making a thoughtful decision.
  • Or when you hold back from speaking up because you’ve been conditioned to keep the peace.
  • Or when you stay in roles or relationships that no longer fit because walking away feels like failure.
  • You may recognize it in the pressure to perform, to please, or to be perfect—not because it brings you joy, but because deep down, you fear that being anything less will make you unlovable, unsafe, or unseen.

This is what happens when fear, not truth, shapes our identity.
And it’s not just emotional—it’s neurological.

Psychologists and trauma experts like Dr. Bruce Perry and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk explain that our nervous systems adapt to early environments in order to survive. If you were raised in a home where emotions were invalidated, love was conditional, or silence was praised, your brain learned how to suppress, conform, and perform. That adaptation kept you safe back then. But now? It could be the very thing holding you back from the life you were created to live.

These beliefs become invisible scripts. You might not even realize you’re following them until something feels “off”—like you’re constantly striving, yet never satisfied. Like you’re living your life, but not fully alive in it.

But here’s the hope: what was learned for survival can be unlearned in healing.

And part of that healing starts with naming what’s been unspoken.

Here’s one powerful step to turn things around:

Start by identifying one core belief that might not actually be true.

Ask yourself:

  • Who told me this?
  • Was it said directly, or implied through how love and attention were given or withheld?
  • Does this belief serve the woman I’m becoming—or the scared child I once was?

Awareness is the first step to healing. Once you name the belief, you can begin to challenge it with truth, curiosity, and self-compassion. And you don’t have to do that work alone.

That’s exactly what we explore in this week’s podcast episode—a two-part, soul-stirring conversation with Carrie Myers.

Carrie grew up in a strict Christian household where perfection and emotional restraint were the unspoken expectations. She battled anorexia, endured an emotionally exhausting marriage, and spent years feeling like she was living a life that wasn’t truly hers.

In Part 1, she vulnerably shares how it felt to live under the weight of those internalized rules. She opens up about the ache of performance-based identity and the moment she began questioning the beliefs that had quietly shaped her entire life.

In Part 2, we dig deeper into what it looks like to break free. Carrie talks about untangling perfectionism, building self-worth from a place of grace, and finally using her voice to make a difference. She reminds us that healing isn’t about fixing yourself—it’s about remembering who you were before the world told you who to be.

We also talk about how fear of disappointing others—especially in faith-based spaces—can keep women silent and stuck. But when you start telling the truth about your story? You begin to reclaim your life. You stop living from duty and start living from purpose.

Which brings me to this...
