From Brokenness to Freedom: Embracing Deliverance, Renewing the Mind, and Equipping for the Journey

In the vast tapestry of human existence, deliverance holds immense significance. It is the promise of freedom, the assurance of release from bondage, and the hope of transformation. As Christians, we believe that Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection has offered us deliverance from sin and its consequences.

However, it is crucial to understand that being delivered is not a one-time event but a lifelong process that requires our active participation and faith. This blog post will explore how we can walk out our journey of deliverance in our everyday lives, supported by the timeless truths found in Scripture.

Self-Awareness: Acknowledging Our Need for Deliverance

Scripture reminds us that we were all once enslaved by sin (Romans 3:23), separated from God and bound by our own shortcomings. It is through the sacrificial love of Jesus that we have been offered deliverance. Recognizing our need for deliverance is the first step towards embracing the transformative power of Christ.

Self-awareness plays a vital role in acknowledging our need for deliverance. It is the key that unlocks the door to a deeper understanding of our condition and prompts us to seek change. In moments of self-awareness, we come face-to-face with the reality that we cannot continue in the state we find ourselves in. It is in these moments of clarity that we are compelled to take action and turn towards God for help.

Deliverance often emerges from a place of desperation and brokenness. When we find ourselves in a state of despair, feeling trapped and unable to find a way out, it is in these moments that we recognize our need for something greater than ourselves. Psalm 34:18 reminds us that "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." In our brokenness, we can find solace in knowing that God is near and ready to bring deliverance.

However, in the midst of our brokenness and desperation, we may not have all the answers or know the way forward. Proverbs 3:5-6 provides a powerful reminder: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." We may not know what to do, but we can trust that God, who is all-knowing and compassionate, has a plan for our deliverance. By acknowledging Him in all our ways, surrendering our limited understanding, and trusting in His guidance, He will direct our paths and lead us into the freedom He has prepared for us.

As we cultivate self-awareness, recognize our brokenness, trust in God, and acknowledge Him in all our ways, we position ourselves to receive the deliverance He offers. It is through our admission that we can no longer stay where we are that we invite God's intervention and open ourselves to His transformative power. Deliverance is not merely wishful thinking or self-reliance but a humble reliance on God, knowing that He alone can set us free.

Embracing Personal Responsibility in the Journey of Deliverance

At the cross, Jesus died for our healing and freedom. Isaiah 53:5 tells us, "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."

Through His sacrificial act, Jesus paid the price for our sins, offering us forgiveness and reconciliation with God. Colossians 2:13-14 explains, "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross."

Furthermore, 1 Peter 2:24 states, "He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed."

However, our journey of deliverance requires personal surrender. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps." We must reach a point where we recognize the futility of trying to save ourselves and humbly admit that we can't keep doing things the same way and expect different results.

We experience a turning point in this breaking point—a moment of surrender and trust in God's salvation. Psalm 51:17 affirms, "My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise." As we let go of our self-reliance and self-sufficiency, we open ourselves to the transformative power of Christ. It is in our brokenness and surrender that God's grace and love can flow freely, bringing healing, freedom, and deliverance into our lives.

It is important to remember that Jesus has already done the work of deliverance on the cross. Galatians 5:1 declares, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Our role is to position ourselves to receive and walk in the victory He has secured for us. This requires letting go of old patterns, habits, and mindsets that hinder us from fully embracing the freedom and abundant life Christ offers.

Curiosity and Renewal: A 3-Step Process to Transform Our Mind

Renewing our minds is a transformative journey that requires intentional effort and reliance on God's Word. Here is a 3-step process to help guide you in curiosity and alignment of your thoughts.

Step one:

Take Your Thoughts Captive

The first step to renewing your mind is to become curious of your thoughts and bring them under the lordship of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 encourages us to "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." Doing so gives you an accurate picture of where you are in life and what you truly believe.

Step two:

Assess Alignment with Your Identity in Christ

Once you have taken your thoughts captive, assess whether they align with your identity as a follower of Christ. Use the fruits of the Spirit as a measuring stick to evaluate your thoughts. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruits of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Step three:

Take Action on the Thought

Having assessed the alignment of your thoughts with your identity in Christ, it's time to take action. If a thought is in line with the character of the Spirit and reflects the truth of God's Word, you can keep it and move forward. However, if a thought is not aligned, replace it with a truth from Scripture or an affirmation that consciously reprograms your mind.

Renewing your mind is an ongoing process that requires consistency and perseverance. By consciously aligning your thoughts with the truth of God's Word and the character of the Holy Spirit, you will experience a transformation that leads to a renewed mind and a life that reflects the glory of Christ.

Preparing for the Battle: Putting on the Full Armor of God

Becoming who God created you to be requires preparation for the spiritual battles and trials that come your way. In Ephesians 6:10-18, the apostle Paul provides an insightful guide on how to equip ourselves for the battles we face. He urges us to put on the full armor of God, highlighting the significance of each piece in our journey of becoming who God has created us to be.

The Belt of Truth:

The belt of truth is the foundational piece of our armor. It represents the truth of God's Word and the assurance of His promises. Truth serves as a guide, helping us discern between right and wrong, and enabling us to combat the lies of the enemy.

The Breastplate of Righteousness:

The breastplate of righteousness protects our hearts and represents our standing before God. Through faith in Christ, we are declared righteous, which guards us against the enemy's accusations and condemnation.

The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace:

The shoes of the gospel of peace provide us with stability and readiness to share the good news of Jesus Christ. They enable us to walk confidently and bring the message of peace and reconciliation to a broken world.

The Shield of Faith:

The shield of faith protects us from the fiery darts of the enemy. It represents our unwavering trust in God and His promises. With faith, we can extinguish every doubt and fear that tries to undermine our journey of becoming who God created us to be.

The Helmet of Salvation:

The helmet of salvation guards our minds and thoughts. It reminds us of our secure identity in Christ and our eternal hope in Him. We can resist the enemy's attacks on our identity and purpose with this assurance.

The Sword of the Spirit:

The sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, is both an offensive and defensive weapon. It enables us to speak and declare the truth of God's Word, defeating the lies and deceptions of the enemy. It also helps us grow in knowledge and wisdom, equipping us for our battles.

Praying in the Spirit:

While not explicitly mentioned as a physical piece of armor, prayer is vital in our preparation for battle. It connects us with God, invites His guidance and strength, and helps us remain vigilant and alert as we navigate our journey of becoming who God created us to be.

Finding Like-Minded People: The Power of Community

In our journey of becoming who God created us to be, it is essential to surround ourselves with like-minded individuals who share our faith, values, and mission. The benefits of community are evident throughout Scripture, highlighting the significance of finding companionship, encouragement, accountability, and increased power to fulfill God's purposes.

Encouragement and Support

Matthew 18:20 reminds us of the power of gathering together in Jesus' name: "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." When we come together with fellow believers, we experience the encouragement and support that can only be found in the community of faith. Through shared experiences, prayers, and uplifting conversations, we find strength and inspiration to keep pressing forward.

Accountability and Growth

Hebrews 10:24-25 emphasizes the importance of gathering regularly and spurring one another on toward love and good deeds: "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." In community, we find accountability that helps us grow in our faith, character, and commitment to living out God's mission.

Proverbs 27:17 reminds us of the transformative power of community: "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." When we surround ourselves with like-minded believers, we experience the mutual sharpening of our faith, wisdom, and character. Through meaningful interactions, discussions, and sharing of insights, we can grow and mature together.

Prayer and Healing

James 5:16 highlights the role of community in prayer and healing: "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." In the context of community, we can openly share our struggles, seek counsel, and support one another through prayer. This fosters an environment of healing, restoration, and spiritual growth.

Bearing One Another's Burdens

Galatians 6:1-2 reminds us of our responsibility to bear one another's burdens and offer support in times of need: "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." In the context of community, we can share our joys and sorrows, supporting and assisting one another in times of trial.

Approach this Journey with Grace & Compassion

Transformation takes time, and setbacks may occur along the way. But in those moments, we can rest in God's grace, knowing that His power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to "be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." By extending grace and compassion, we create a safe and loving environment where healing and growth can flourish.

Throughout our journey, let us remember that God works in us to will and act according to His good purpose (Philippians 2:13). We are not alone in this deliverance process. God's Spirit is with us, guiding, transforming, and empowering us every step of the way.

As we lean on Him, rely on His grace, and walk in compassion, we will experience the transformative power of His love in our lives.
