149: Curiosity, Compassion, and Community: The Science Behind Lasting Transformation
Have you ever felt like you’re doing everything you’re supposed to do to change your life—reading the books, going to counseling, praying, trying harder—yet something still feels like it’s holding you back?
In this episode, Megan Babcock explores the science behind three powerful elements that support lasting transformation: curiosity, compassion, and community.
Building on the previous three episodes in the “Getting Unstuck” series, Megan reviews the Why–What–How Curiosity to Clarity Framework, a simple process designed to help you pause when your nervous system becomes activated and investigate what is happening beneath the surface.
Research published in Frontiers in Psychology suggests that healing often accelerates when we shift from trying to “fix” ourselves to curiously exploring our experiences. Curiosity allows us to notice patterns in our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors instead of reacting automatically. This awareness increases psychological flexibility and creates the space for insight and change.
The second question in the framework—“What do I need right now?”—introduces the role of self-compassion. Research from Dr. Kristin Neff shows that self-compassion helps calm the nervous system by replacing self-criticism with understanding and care. When we respond to ourselves with compassion, the body begins to feel safer, allowing the brain to regain clarity and access better decision-making.
Together, curiosity and compassion calm the body and mind, preparing the way for the final question: How do I move forward? In this moment of clarity, we begin to recognize that we have a choice in how we respond.
But curiosity and compassion alone are not enough.
Megan explains why community and support are essential parts of lasting healing. Trauma often becomes stored in the body and mind when painful experiences occur without the support needed to process them. Without safe relationships to help us make sense of what happened, the nervous system can remain stuck in survival mode.
Science shows that our nervous systems regulate through relationships in a process called co-regulation. When we are surrounded by safe and supportive people, the body begins to calm and the brain can process experiences that once felt overwhelming.
Vulnerability also plays an important role in healing. Researcher Brené Brown’s work highlights how sharing our stories in safe environments reduces shame and increases connection. When people feel seen and supported, healing becomes possible in ways that rarely happen in isolation.
Through her own story of leaving an abusive marriage and finding support through a domestic abuse advocate and healing communities, Megan shares how connection, vulnerability, and shared healing environments helped her nervous system move out of survival mode and into growth.
Today, that journey has grown into the nonprofit It’s Your Story to Tell, a movement designed to help women heal, discover their calling, and step into the life they were created to live.
